Commuting by car? Choose your village in Winchester carefully!

Winchester’s pretty villages have great appeal to families wanting to get the best of both worlds – access to great schools, village life and rolling countryside – all within a convenient commute of their workplace, which is often away from the city. With good motorway access and rail links, Winchester is well placed for commuting to London and most of the south of England.

But if you’re new to the area and intending to commute mainly by car, it’s worth making sure you choose your picturesque village carefully. Central Winchester is lovely, and the rail links are fantastic, but for drivers, negotiating traffic across the city during rush hour is not the most fun use of time. Being on the right side of the city can make the world of difference!

Here’s a quick round up of the best villages to live in, based on your regular commuting destination by road (we’ll focus on rail links another time):

If you’re intending to drive north or south on the M3 to places like Basingstoke, southwest London, Southampton, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and the west, you’re better off living somewhere near the Junction 9 or Junction 11 exits. Popular commuter villages here include Itchen AbbasKings WorthyEastonComptonShawfordTwyfordHursley or OtterbourneMicheldever is also worth a mention, although a little further away from the centre of Winchester.

For easy access onto the A34 to Newbury and the M4, villages such as Sutton ScotneyLittletonKings Worthy and Headbourne Worthy can be a good choice.

And if the A31 is important to you for reaching destinations such as Alton, Farnham and Guildford, we’d recommend EastonCheriton or Alresford.

Each village has its own character and attractions and house prices can vary considerably. Your budget and daily commute are of course important factors, but there are also other things such as school catchment areas, the type of community you want to be part of, local amenities and, of course, the reputation of the local pub to consider! Add in your already busy life to the mix and it’s easy to understand why more and more families are seeking professional support in their search for the perfect home.
